This Early Years Good Practice Certificate is designed to help candidates develop their professional thinking and practice and enhance the quality of teaching and learning. Practising teachers and practitioners will be able to focus on the development of knowledge, skills and understanding in the key aspects of teaching and learning in early years settings. Candidates are able explore and apply new ideas in their own context, integrate new approaches in their own practice, and demonstrate their professional development as reflective practitioners.

Course Content:

The syllabus consists of balance of activities, appropriate to the needs and circumstances of teachers and their schools. Spread across three clear areas, the programme also provides transferable skills that can be used in any subject area or level of education and covers a range of different teaching and learning styles applicable to different learning needs. The course contains lectures, tutorials, forum discussion, classroom practice & assignments.

UNIT-1

Understanding Child Development

  • Early childhood development and how young children learn and grow.
  • Play-based learning and what makes a learning environment safe and effective for young
  • Role of assessment in the early year’s context.
  • Key features of an effective early years learning activity.

UNIT-2

Teaching in an Effective Early Years Learning Environment

  • Promote curiosity, exploration and communication.
  • Provide an appropriate balance of child-initiated and adult-led activities that enhances high levels of engagement.
  • Observation strategies to monitor and respond to children’s learning.
  • Learning activities using feedback and reflective practice.

UNIT-3

Facilitating Active Learning in the Early Years

  • Learning activities that shows holistic and progressive learning.
  • Play-based learning activities to challenge and extend learning, with differentiation as appropriate.
  • Systematic observation strategies to assess learning and development.
  • Sequence of activities to identify strengths and areas for further development.

Admission Criteria

Candidate:

  • is 18 years old and above
  • has obtained at least 5 GCE ‘O’ Level Passes, including English and Mathematics OR equivalent.
  • has GCE ‘O’ Levels with credit in English; or with English language competence comparable to Level B2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). (*or complete in-house English Language Proficiency Test if none)
  • is a full or part-time practitioner employed in an early year setting. For the purpose of this syllabus, Cambridge understands the Early Years setting to be those children up to and including the age of 6 years old.
  • has the regular support of a mentor who understands the essential principles that underpin this qualification, and can provide helpful advice and observations.
  • teaches a group with a minimum of six young children be responsible for planning, teaching and formatively assessing groups of young children. Candidates who do not meet the above criteria cannot make an entry for this syllabus. Those candidates may meet the criteria for syllabus 5880.
  • has English language competence comparable to Level B2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
  • has completed Diploma or Degree or Higher in any Discipline.
  • has GCE ‘O’ Levels with credit in English; or with English language competence comparable to Level B2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). (*or complete in-house English Language Proficiency Test if none)

Objectives

  • engage with the principles and concepts of teaching and learning in early years to improve their effectiveness as practitioners
  • gain the knowledge, skills and understanding to support an inclusive approach to teaching and learning in early years
  • use opportunities to try something new in their setting
  • engage with colleagues to improve professional knowledge and practice
  • develop a reflective approach to the development of their professional practice.
  • progress their teaching career.

Assessment

Candidates are assessed through a portfolio of evidence, submitted to a team of Cambridge International examiners.

In their portfolio, candidates demonstrate their knowledge, skills and understanding in the context of their own work.

Portfolio evidence includes:

  • observing a colleague’s practice
  • planning, teaching, learning and assessment materials that arise naturally out of the teaching process.
  • feedback from mentor, colleagues, learners and others
  • the candidate’s own reflections on their learning and practice

Graduation

Upon passing, students will be awarded the Cambridge International Certificate in Early Years Good Practice, awarded by the Cambridge International Education, United Kingdom (CIE, UK).

Cambridge Early Years is a Foundation to the Cambridge Pathway.

It continues through Cambridge Primary and Secondary programmes, leading up to qualifications like the IGCSE.

Note :

  1. This course is not accredited by the Early Childhood Development Agency (ECDA).
  2. Graduates who wish to work in the local early childhood sector will need to apply to ECDA for Teacher Registration via a preschool. Approval by ECDA will be subjected to the applicant meeting the requirements for Teacher Registration.
